Dišpetoža
Design.

Dišpetoža design is a small shop of Croatian design handmade products at the very heart of the City of Split and next to the Diocletian’s Palace. The moment you enter Dišpetoža, you feel like in a fairy-tale where everything is possible.  The interior is very pleasant and pets are welcome, too.
The Dišpetoža assortment of products varies from unique handmade jewellery to hand-painted shawls, gloves, headwear, bags, custom-made watches... Mostly there is only one specimen of everything in Dišpetoža treasure chest. The preferred materials are natural ones, such as denims, semi-precious stones, stone from the Island of Brač, wood, coconut....
Dišpetoža is a strong supporter of animal rights and we need to point out that not a single animal suffered because of our products. It also supports environment protection, gender equality, activism which results in various provocative designs that decorate backpacks, bags and t-shirts, all under logo #keepEarthclean.
Dišpetoža takes care of the environment and is a recycling advocate by using natural materials instead of plastic.

Dišpetoža is not just a name or a Dalmatian word, but much more, it is a style of life.

Gregory of Nin

Chancellor of Croatian Court and of the most significant bishops of Nin.   The monumental bronze sculpture was made and given to the City of Split by Ivan Meštrović.
The statue was erected in September 1929 in the Peristyle of Diocletian's Palace, removed during World War II re-erected in a different location, to the north of the Palace and Old Town of Split, just outside the North Gate.
It is customary to rub Gregory’s big toe and make a wish and the legend says that your wish will be granted.
Inspired by this tradition we prepared design Gregory of Nin, rub my toe and a wish you win.

Bajamontuša

(Bajamonti Fountain) — once monumental fountain that was located in front of Prokurative building, on the waterfront, until 1947.
It was ordered in 1880, by doctor Antonio Bajamonti, in his last year of mandate as the mayor of Split.
It was erected as a visible memorial to the reconstruction of Diocletian's Waterway and its shells and allegory figures symbolize the Jadro river, the Adriatic sea and mythological sea creatures.
The figure of a young man at the fountain top with his arm turned towards east indicated at that time desirable economic orientation of Split. It was destroyed by communist authorities in 1947 by dynamite and mallets.
Some of Split citizens, including Dišpetoža, would like a reconstruction of this fountain. The time will show what will come out of it.

Red
PeriStyle

Split has always been a special city, a little bit topsy-turvy perhaps. Keeping that in mind, spilling 30 liters of red paint over the public surface, specifically, Peristyle has all connotations of the true Split dišpet or defiance that somehow got lost in the meantime.
The simple act of spilling the paint over the city square also had many different layers and expressed dissatisfaction with the art and political scene of that time.
The Red Peristyle is a form of conceptual art in the form of urban intervention in the space of the Diocletian’s Palace in Split.
It took place on 11 January 1968. The authors were art students from Split: Pavao Dulčić, Tomo Čaleta, Slaven Sumić, Nenad Đapić, Radovan Kogej, Srđan Blaževic, Denis Dokić....

Tesla

Nikola Tesla was born in 1856, in a small village Smiljan near Gospić, Croatia, and died in 1943, in New York. According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, he was one of 10 most important people in world history.
He registered 112 patents with hundreds of inventions, mostly from the sphere of electrical engineering, in USA and practically as many in the other countries. Many of his inventions remained only on the pages of his diaries or scientific journals.
Dišpetoža Tesla design #ištekatćuvanstruju (Your electricity will be cut off) is a sarcastic remark with regard to the society we live in and situations that happen in it and make no sense at all.
We think if Tesla returned, he would really cut us off from the grid :)

Frida Kahlo

Woman who made revolution and art, and is a symbol of freedom and Mexico, as such.
Since she was a great artist and a strong woman, she deserves to have place at Dišpetoža, and that is why we have a design with her and her quote.
Nowadays we miss more Frida, individual and special, uncompromising and strong women with an attitude no matter what.

Medicine.

Dišpetoža is also an advocate for legalization of this well-known plant, also used as medicine, and as a very good alternative to all sorts of other materials.
Naturally, we mean hemp, and not marijuana. ;)
While it generally takes several hundred years for a plastic bottle to partially decompose in nature, the hemp bottle is decomposed in 58 to 80 days and does not pollute environment,
which is only one of the benefits of this plant, that should be used more considering the pollution of the only planet we have.

You fucked it all up! - Tito

Josip Broz Tito was born on 7 May 1892 in Kumbrovec, Croatia, and died on 4 May1980 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He was a Yugoslavian president for 35 years.
After his death, the tension between the federal republics suddenly increased, escalated into a war and ended in total breakdown of Yugoslavia.
Since then nothing has been the same, privatization  began and took us to a state that is poorer than Bulgaria.
We do not produce, we do not export, we are the most corrupted country with increasing poverty indicators.
The system does not work, let alone rule of law, and that is why, among other things we designed #svesterazjebali (You fucked it all up!)

Welcome to Alan Ford.

Our system does not function, as already mentioned under the Tito design, rule of law does not exist, criminals and thieves walk free, absurd things happen on a daily basis.
As a result, we nowadays live in the Alan Ford world that once we used to read about.
Similar metaphor would be the popular sketch comedy television show Monty Python, the only difference is that Alan Ford was (and is) a comic book.
However, Alan Ford was fun, and all this is tragic, which takes us to our next design Bi´će bolje ´oće kurac (Things will get better — my dick they will.)

Things will get better - My Dick they will

is a design that originated as a consequence of living in this country and in which they keep telling us that things will get better all our lives and we just go down deeper and deeper.
Nothing functions in our country and this is a very funny design, but actually, the bottom of it is very sad.
As a country that can be the richest, we are the champions of poverty. Instead of turning ourselves towards the future, we still discuss issues of people’s whereabouts in 1991, we do not advocate for the right things, we became selfish and empathy is gone.
Greed and political employment have started to come for collection, and I am afraid that there will be nothing left for younger generations, except for spite and twisted moral values.

About design

Fuck your nationalism. We are all earthlings .

is just an extension of all the previous designs, but it also speaks for itself and is quite clear.
Namely, it is dedicated to all people who think they are better than the others because of their skin colour or because they were born in a “better” state, have a better job, make more money, etc.
Do not forget that we all strive for the same things — freedom, health and happiness.
Do not forget that we are all the same under our skins regardless of the place of our birth and all the other things and this design should inspire us to be better and to explain that this planet is our home and we should take care of it.
Who are we to deny somebody else’s freedom in any sense of the word?

Brain (sorry, you 've dropped something)

is a kind of ode to our society.
However, for some it brings joy, and for some sorrow.
We are witnesses to increasing global stupidity and some things that happen are so absurd that they border on realistic, but are accepted in the society of today.
People do not read books; they do not listen to good music any longer.
The biggest achievement of most of people is to post a story on the Instagram, which is not even sad, but very concerning.
Naturally, as all our other designs, this one is also funny, but carries a deeper message.

Albert Einstein (14.03. 1879 - 18.04.1955)

for those that do not know, Einstein is a well-known physicist.
His main work is theory of relativity (1916).
It is interesting that he started speaking at the age of three and spoke very rarely until the age of nine. We decided to use this quote of his because it is in line with the
Dišpetoža mindset — never be quiet, always be loud, especially if there is injustice going on. It does not matter whether the injustice was inflicted on us or on somebody else, we need to point it out if we are aware of it.

Marjan

local design related to the Marjan hill overlooking Split, with the highest peak of 178 meters.
The fact that we climb the Marjan hill from the very waterfront makes everything special. After all, the entire city is special.
Marjan found its place on many postcards of this City, unfortunately now it looks like a plucked bird, which is horrible if we are aware of the fact that it was pronounced the forest park on 16 December 1964 and thus protected by Croatian Nature Protection Act.
Marjan is the most visible victim of systematic negligence, unprofessionalism and work for the benefit of personal interests of some individuals from this City, hence it is not a forest any more, but bare and ruined hillock prepared for total devastation of the area, that is, construction on particular land plots (let’s hope we are wrong).
Marjan is the most visible victim of this system and we are not aware of the consequences for all of us yet, especially today when every tree, every forest, every green area is priceless.

Dogs

are special beings. They are pure love, clean and uncorrupted. They love you no matter what.
They do not judge, they do not care if you have money or education, they do not care if you live in luxury or poverty, they want you just as you are, because their love knows no calculation and it is not ego-driven.
The dogs also taught me to a new dimension of feeling and made me a better person (I have four foster-dogs), while people, on the other hand, often give me headache.
I am not the only person who feels this way, and that is the origin of this design, that is a kind of ode to dogs and all the pure love and happiness they represent.

Cats

are very specific and different from dogs, unlike dogs, they do not have masters that they strongly bond with.
They are always independent no matter what.
Cats are unpredictable, but also soothing and therapeutic for persons who take care of them and pet them, particularly when they fall asleep in their laps and give them a purr. It is also considered that pussycats are the most represented pets.

Miljenko Smoje

One and only, outstanding Miljenko Smoje, a man who gave it all to Split, and Split gave him nothing in return, would be 99 on this year’s St. Valentine’s day (Split, 14 February 1923 — Split, 25 October 1995) and that is why Dišpetoža decided to honour him with this design. We will never manage to pay him back for all the things that Smoje did to oblige this city, which is utterly despicable.  Right, a tiny little street in Varoš was named after him and that’s it. Sad, but true. OK, he might get his little corner in Žrnovnica, but I’ll believe it when I see it...
Though, I would make his work a mandatory school reading, but nobody asks me anything, so I’ll remain silent.  Smoje, a visionary, who was way ahead of his time, was killing them then, just as he is killing them now, because of his straightforwardness, and people don’t like that. People are not very fond of that at any time, especially in those times of bribery and corruption orchestrated by our patriots and assholes.  He is a child of Varoš, who made Split great and known all over the world, I’d better not mention TV series Small Place and Big Place, one of his most famous and never more appropriate sayings was: “If somebody put a tent over this city, we would have the biggest circus in the world.” That is a quote of this design.  Makes sense, right?  His texts were read on Radio Split, published in papers Slobodna Dalmacija, Vjesnik and Feral Tribune.

He was a journalist, writer, screenwriter, but first of all, he was a great and funny man.  He was everything I respect — honest, direct, consistent and incorruptible, and as such well deserving to become a part of Dišpetoža’ story.  All this would not have been possible without assistance of my dear Feđa Klarić because, believe it or not, this is Smoje’s original signature...  I thought about Smoje for a long time, but because of a million little things, this design has come out now, I guess it is exactly as it was meant to be, because all the puzzles fell into their places only when I stopped fretting and pushing myself…
Sometimes, the universe is wiser than we are, obviously.  Just like Smoje was.  That is why we need to know how to read and listen to both of them.
